The Outlander PHEV operates in three modes depending on the type of driving you are doing, and moves between these modes automatically.

(1) EV DRIVE MODE
ELECTRIC POWER ONLY
Two motors power all four wheels using electricity from the lithium-ion battery.
The PHEVs main battery can take the car up to 50 kilometres on EV power alone, with no exhaust emissions and a near-silent drive.

(2) SERIES HYBRID MODE
ELECTRIC POWER & ENGINE ASSISTANCE
The petrol engine operates as a generator, supplying electricity to the battery which in turn powers the motors. This is an efficient use of fuel and occurs when the battery charge falls below a pre-determined level or when more power is required (overtaking, or on hills).

(3) PARALLEL HYBRID MODE
ENGINE POWER & MOTOR ASSISTANCE
The petrol engine provides most of the power, with assistance from the electric motors when required.
